Chinese Railcar in Argentina Utilizes Battery Power for Sustainable Travel
A Chinese-built railcar, operating in the Andean region of Argentina, is utilizing a 352 kilowatt-hour battery system for its operations. This railcar, known as the Tren Solar de la Quebrada, runs on a 26-mile track between Volcán and Tilcara in Jujuy province. Despite its name, the train does not have solar panels on its roof; instead, it relies on batteries charged from the local grid, which is powered by solar farms in the region. The railcar was constructed by CRRC Tangshan and represents the first Chinese light rail trains exported to Argentina. The train has achieved significant passenger numbers, with a reported 7,340 passengers in July 2026, marking a 17.4% increase from the previous year.
