Americans Value Press Freedom but Differ on Limits, Pew Research Center Study Finds
A new study by the Pew Research Center, in collaboration with the Pew-Knight Initiative, reveals that while most Americans consider freedom of the press important, their support is not absolute, particularly concerning government restrictions. The study indicates that 80% of Americans find it acceptable for news organizations to protect a source's identity. However, this support diminishes when it comes to publishing confidential government information, with only 47% finding it acceptable, and even fewer (24%) for classified military details during active conflicts. The findings highlight a nuanced public perception where the value of press freedom is weighed against concerns for national security and the accuracy of information. The study also notes a significant increase in Americans getting news from social media platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram since 2020.
