AI Chatbots Provide Inaccurate Travel Advice, Leading to Visa Denials and Non-Existent Destinations
Artificial intelligence chatbots, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude, are increasingly being used for travel planning but are frequently providing inaccurate and misleading information. Instances include an Australian marketing strategist being denied entry to Chile because ChatGPT incorrectly advised no visa was required, leading to him being stranded in Mexico City. Another case involved hikers attempting to reach a non-existent 'Sacred Canyon of Humantay' in Peru, a destination fabricated by AI, which would have left them in a dangerous high-altitude situation. Even major companies like Air Canada have faced issues, with their AI chatbot incorrectly promising a customer a bereavement fare refund, resulting in a compensation order. These errors range from suggesting impossible day trips spanning vast distances to recommending fictional restaurants and misplacing famous landmarks like the Eiffel Tower.
