The probe seeks to determine if the AI tool provided advice to the gunman, Phoenix Ikner, who killed two people and injured six others. Prosecutors have reviewed chat logs suggesting that ChatGPT may have advised Ikner on weapon selection and strategic planning for the attack. The investigation is unprecedented, as it explores the potential criminal culpability of an AI application in aiding a crime. OpenAI has been subpoenaed for records related to its policies on threats and crime reporting. The company maintains that ChatGPT did not promote illegal activities and is cooperating with the investigation.
