California Coast Faces Severe Erosion, Evacuations, and Sinkhole Damage
The California coastline is experiencing significant impacts from Hurricane Marie, despite the storm being far offshore. Coastal erosion, driven by powerful surf and elevated tides, has led to the evacuation of 20 oceanfront homes in Long Beach, California. A compromised seawall, cracked concrete, and localized flooding have been reported in the area. In Malibu, a massive sinkhole formed in the driveway of a Hollywood celebrity's property, triggering a gas leak and prompting the city to declare a local state of emergency. Coastal Flood Advisories have been in effect since Labor Day weekend, with Southern California seeing the most severe impacts. Beaches like Aliso Beach in Laguna Beach have suffered extensive erosion, with infrastructure such as parking lots and seawalls collapsing under the relentless surf.
