Manitoba Farmer Advocates for Mental Health Support in Agriculture Amidst Industry Challenges
Gerry Friesen, a former farmer from southwestern Manitoba, is actively advocating for mental health support within the agricultural community. Having experienced the mental toll of farming firsthand, Friesen is now a vocal proponent for breaking the silence surrounding mental health issues in agriculture. He is participating in the Mental Health on the Prairies conference at Brandon University, where he will share his personal journey of dealing with anxiety and depression. Friesen co-founded the Manitoba Farmer Wellness Program to provide resources and encourage open conversations about mental health. The conference aims to address the unique mental health challenges faced by rural communities, including farmers, Indigenous communities, and youth, by bringing together service providers, policymakers, and individuals with lived experiences.
