Nicolas Maduro and US Prosecutors Propose June 2027 Trial Date for Drug Trafficking Charges
Ousted Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and US prosecutors have proposed a June 2027 start date for his criminal trial on drug trafficking charges. This proposal was made in a court filing ahead of a scheduled hearing in Manhattan federal court. The case is being overseen by US District Judge Alvin Hellerstein, who will ultimately set the trial schedule. Maduro, captured by US Special Forces in January, faces charges including narco-terrorism, conspiracy, and money laundering. He and his wife, Cilia Flores, were brought to New York following their capture in Caracas. Both have pleaded not guilty. The filing outlines that Maduro's first round of legal motions, potentially including a motion to dismiss based on sovereign immunity, is due by September 2. A second round of motions is expected by January 11, after the defense reviews any classified evidence provided by prosecutors.
