Aggressive Shark Sighting Forces Postponement of Huntington Beach Surf Competition
The World Surf League postponed a major surf competition at Huntington Beach due to the sighting of an aggressive 10-foot shark. The event, known as the Vans Jack’s Surfboards Pro, is part of the World Surf League Qualifying Series and attracts numerous spectators and surf enthusiasts. The shark was spotted near lifeguard tower No. 3, prompting authorities to implement a 24-hour water closure as a precaution. The species of the shark remains unidentified, but its aggressive behavior, including circling and charging, led to the decision to halt the competition. The Marine Safety Division of the Huntington Beach Fire Department, along with local authorities, monitored the waters using jet skis, lifeguard boats, drones, and a police helicopter to ensure safety. The competition is set to resume once the area is deemed safe, with the next call for surfers scheduled for Saturday morning.
