WHO Highlights Global Health Risks from Rising Heat Waves
The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a detailed report on the growing health risks posed by heat waves worldwide. Heat stress is now recognized as a leading cause of weather-related deaths, exacerbating conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and respiratory illnesses. Vulnerable populations, including the elderly and outdoor workers, face heightened risks. Between 2000 and 2019, approximately 489,000 heat-related deaths occurred annually, with Asia and Europe accounting for 81% of these fatalities. The report emphasizes that heat waves are increasing in frequency, duration, and intensity due to climate change, with cascading impacts on health systems, labor productivity, and infrastructure.
