Meta Removes End-to-End Encryption from Instagram DMs, Raising Privacy Concerns
Meta has announced the removal of end-to-end encryption from Instagram direct messages, a feature that had been available since 2023. The company cited low user adoption as the reason for discontinuing the feature, which was not enabled by default and required users to activate it for each conversation. This change means that Meta can now access the content of Instagram messages, which could be shared with law enforcement agencies. The removal comes ahead of the Take It Down Act, which mandates the removal of non-consensual intimate imagery within 48 hours, a task complicated by encryption. Meta suggests users seeking encrypted messaging use WhatsApp, another app it owns, or alternatives like iMessage and Signal.
