Southern California Heat Wave Peaks, Relief Expected Soon
Southern California is currently experiencing a significant heat wave, with temperatures peaking through Sunday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). Highs are reaching the 90s to low 100s in the valleys, with the Antelope Valley exceeding 100°F (37.8°C). Coastal areas are slightly cooler, ranging from the 70s to 80s (21-31°C). Muggy conditions are limiting overnight cooling, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses. A heat advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. Monday. The Santa Barbara Airport recorded a record-high temperature of 95°F (35°C) on Wednesday, surpassing the previous record of 94°F (34.4°C) set in 2016. The heat wave has also contributed to dry conditions, fueling 11 new wildfires across California this week, including incidents in Riverside and San Diego counties.
