Erin Stewart Suspends Gubernatorial Campaign Amid Fraud Allegations
Erin Stewart, the former mayor of New Britain, has suspended her campaign for governor following an investigative report that accused her of misusing a city-issued credit card for personal expenses. The report, commissioned by her Democratic successor, Mayor Bobby Sanchez, alleges that Stewart's use of the card amounted to a 'repeated and deliberate circumvention' of the city's purchase order system, benefiting herself and her political campaigns. The investigation, conducted by the Crumbie Law Group, found that the majority of the $207,076 charged to the card over nearly a decade was unrelated to city business. The report suggests that these actions warrant a criminal investigation by state and federal authorities. Stewart has denied the allegations, calling the investigation a 'witch hunt,' but has not disputed the authenticity of the credit card records. She has endorsed her rival, state Sen. Ryan Fazio, for the Republican nomination.
