Skokie to Implement Tax on Streaming Services and Increase Entertainment Tax
The Village of Skokie has advanced an ordinance to introduce a 5% tax on digital streaming services such as Netflix, Disney+, Spotify, and Apple Music. Additionally, the village's entertainment tax, known as the 'amusement' tax, will increase from 2% to 5%. This tax will apply to admission costs for theaters, shows, sports events, and other in-person entertainment. The new taxes are intended to fund a fourth ambulance for the village during peak demand hours and cover additional permitting and inspection services. The ordinance was approved by the Village Board on May 18, 2026, and is set for a second reading and adoption on June 1, 2026.
