Lightning Storm Causes Power Outages Across South Iceland
A significant lightning storm struck South Iceland, causing widespread power outages. According to the Icelandic Meteorological Office, approximately 3,000 lightning strikes were recorded during the event. The storm primarily affected areas south of the capital region, including Mosfellsbær, Landeyjar, VÃk à Mýrdal, Vestmannaeyjar, and Borgarfjörður eystri. The BúrfellslÃna 1 transmission line was hit, leading to disruptions in electricity supply. Temporary outages also impacted KeflavÃk Airport and the Alþingishúsið, where backup systems were activated. Thunderstorms are relatively rare in Iceland, with only a few occurrences each year, making this event notable.
