Austin Mayor Kirk Watson Opposes City Budget, Advocates for Significant Cuts Without Tax Increases
Austin Mayor Kirk Watson recently opposed the city's newly approved budget, joining only one other Council member in his dissent. Watson's primary concern stems from the budget's failure to adopt a 'No New Revenue' (NNR) approach, which he had advocated for. According to the city manager's staff, operating at an NNR level would necessitate immediate cuts of $26.4 million, in addition to cuts already made for a 3.5% budget increase. These cuts would escalate to $122 million by Fiscal Year 2031 if the NNR level were maintained. To achieve the initial $26 million reduction, the city would face difficult choices, such as closing all community centers and pools or eliminating 240 positions from police, fire, and EMS departments. Watson's criticism highlights a desire for greater fiscal discipline and a reevaluation of city spending priorities, despite having previously supported spending obligations that now contribute to the budget's strain.
