Research Explores Social Media's Complex Impact on Mental Health
Research indicates a complex relationship between social media use and mental health outcomes, with associations found between some forms of social media use and poorer mental health, particularly when usage feels difficult to control. Studies on adolescents have shown varied results, with some reporting positive associations between social media use and mental health concerns. A larger systematic review and meta-analysis of 182 studies involving over 1.1 million young people found small positive associations between social media use and depression and anxiety. Problematic use, specifically, was linked to depression, anxiety, sleep problems, and lower well-being.
