California Implements AI Transparency Law to Combat Misinformation
California has enacted a new AI transparency law aimed at helping individuals identify AI-generated content. The law, co-authored by state Sen. Josh Becker and Assemblymember Buffy Wicks, requires AI companies to embed provenance data in images and videos, making it difficult to remove. This data will help users determine whether content is AI-generated. The law, which took nearly three years to implement, aligns with similar regulations in the European Union. It will be phased in over several years, with additional requirements for online platforms and device manufacturers to store and display provenance information.
