European Heatwave Causes Significant Economic and Agricultural Losses
Europe experienced an unprecedented heatwave in June 2026, leading to severe economic and agricultural impacts. According to recent data, France recorded at least 5,700 more deaths than usual during this period, with the heatwave affecting nearly the entire population. The heatwave resulted in over 10,000 additional deaths across Europe, highlighting the severe impact of climate change. The agricultural sector was particularly hard hit, with cereal farmers facing reduced yields due to the extreme heat affecting crop development. The EU harvest forecast was reduced by 9 million tonnes, with significant losses in France, Hungary, and Spain. The heatwave also had a substantial economic impact, with the UK economy losing over £1 billion due to 24 million lost working hours. The London School of Economics and Political Science and the Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change reported that the heatwave disrupted work and health, with many workers experiencing health-related issues.
