New Jersey Software Error Registers Non-Citizens to Vote, Leading to Investigation
A significant software error in New Jersey's Motor Vehicle Commission system resulted in approximately 6,600 non-U.S. citizens being mistakenly registered to vote between June 2023 and June 2024. Governor Mikie Sherrill announced that around 400 of these individuals cast ballots in the state. The error occurred when individuals who indicated they were not U.S. citizens were still registered to vote due to a malfunction in the system. This issue arose during former Governor Phil Murphy's administration, and an investigation has been launched to address the oversight. The New Jersey DMV plans to replace the vendor responsible for the faulty system and implement additional safeguards to prevent future errors. The error was corrected in 2024, a year after it was first identified.
