Alpine Meadows Ski Resort Implements New Avalanche Control System and Facility Upgrades

Alpine Meadows ski resort has installed five new Wyssen avalanche control towers, marking a significant change from their previous Gazex system. The Wyssen system uses a tower to remotely drop solid explosive charges, which are reported to be more intense and capable of causing snow release over a wider area compared to the propane-based Gazex system. While the smaller Wyssen towers can be loaded with six explosive cartridges, requiring patrollers to climb them for reloading, larger versions exist that are reloaded by helicopter. Additionally, the resort has undertaken various summer projects, including extensive trail maintenance, particularly in the Lakeview area, focusing on clearing dead trees to improve navigability. A recent Pew Research Center report, "Tradition and Change Among Latter-day Saints in the U.S.," indicates a significant shift in the church's demographics. The proportion of white Latter-day Saints in the U.S. decreased from 85% in 2007 to 72% by 2024, while Hispanic membership doubled from 6% to 12%, and Black membership grew from 2% to 6%. Additionally, 7% of Native Hawaiians or other Pacific Islanders in the U.S. identify as Latter-day Saints.
