Estonia's Seto Community Celebrates Cultural Heritage with Annual Kingdom Day
The Seto ethnic community in Estonia celebrates its cultural heritage with an annual event known as Seto Kingdom Day. This event transforms a village in southeastern Estonia into a symbolic kingdom for a day, complete with traditional costumes, music, and a mock military parade. The celebration aims to preserve the Seto language and culture, which have been challenged by historical geopolitical changes, including the division of their homeland by the Estonian-Russian border. The event also features the election of a new community leader, or 'ülemsootska,' who represents the Seto people and promotes their cultural traditions.
