Colorado's Hut-to-Hut Hiking: 350 Miles of Scenic Trails
Colorado offers a unique hut-to-hut hiking experience across 350 miles of trails in the Rockies, managed by the 10th Mountain Division Hut Association. This system includes 38 huts, 14 of which are directly managed by the association, while the rest are privately or partner-owned. These huts provide communal sleeping spaces and basic amenities like stoves and cookware, but hikers must bring their own food and supplies. The trails vary in difficulty, with elevation gains ranging from 1,500 to 3,000 feet, and many huts are located above 10,000 feet. The system is inspired by World War II soldiers who trained in the area and offers a flexible approach to backcountry exploration, allowing hikers to link multiple huts or use one as a basecamp for day hikes.
