Origin Energy Data Breach Exposes 900,000 Customers' Information
Origin Energy Limited, a major Australian electricity and gas retailer, has confirmed a data breach affecting 900,000 current and former customers. The breach involved unauthorized access to sensitive customer data, including names, dates of birth, phone numbers, addresses, account information, and partial payment card or bank account numbers. The company began investigating a potential security threat in early July, initially deeming it not credible. However, new information on July 22 confirmed the breach. An individual claiming responsibility for the hack alleged that data from 2 million customers was obtained and threatened to leak it unless a ransom was paid. Although the hacker later suggested an agreement was reached with Origin, the company has not confirmed this, stating the matter is under criminal investigation.
