Easton Coin Wrapper and SS Central America Artifacts Highlight Lost Americana
The Easton Coin Wrapper/Coin Shadow Box from Finest Known showcases artifacts from the SS Central America, a ship that sank in 1857 carrying a significant amount of California gold. Among the items displayed are Graded SSR Half Dollars and Eureka Nuggets, which were part of the ship's cargo. The SS Central America, often referred to as the 'Ship of Gold,' was lost in a hurricane off the Carolina coast and remained undiscovered for over a century. The recovery of these artifacts in the late 20th century has brought renewed interest in the historical significance of the ship and its cargo. The shadow box includes a silk handkerchief and a handwritten note by Ansel Easton, a businessman who discovered a gold coin in Sacramento in 1857, which was later lost with the ship.
