Tactile Hallucinations: Understanding Causes, Symptoms, and Care
Tactile hallucinations, also known as haptic hallucinations, involve the perception of touch sensations without any external physical stimulus. These sensations can manifest in various ways, such as feeling insects crawling on or under the skin (formication), being touched, pinched, burned, or experiencing movement in body parts. Unlike ordinary itching or pain caused by physical conditions, tactile hallucinations originate from the brain's misinterpretation or generation of sensory input. While distressing, these experiences are symptoms rather than a diagnosis and do not automatically indicate a psychiatric illness. They can be brief or persistent, affecting small or large areas of the body, and may be more noticeable during periods of stress or sleep deprivation. A thorough medical assessment is crucial to differentiate tactile hallucinations from actual physical sensations and to identify underlying causes.
