Austin Extends Waterway Ban Amid Rescues on Colorado River
Five individuals, including two adults and three children, were rescued from the Colorado River near Montopolis Bridge in Austin, Texas, on Sunday after encountering strong currents. The rescue occurred a day after the city extended its waterway activity ban for Lady Bird Lake and the Colorado River downstream of Longhorn Dam. The ban, which prohibits the use of personal and commercial boats, kayaks, paddleboards, and other watercraft, is in place due to hazardous conditions caused by recent severe flooding and dam operations. The city has cited elevated water flows, limited underwater visibility, debris, and potential bacterial contamination as reasons for the restrictions. The ban is currently set to expire on Saturday at 5 p.m., though it may be extended further if conditions remain unsafe.
