Global Astrophotography Highlights: Stunning Milky Way Images for 2026
Capture the Atlas has released its 2026 Milky Way Photographer of the Year collection, featuring 25 breathtaking images of the galaxy captured under pristine dark skies worldwide. This annual project, now in its ninth year, celebrates astrophotography and promotes the preservation of dark skies. The 2026 edition received over 6,500 submissions, the highest in its history, with photographers from 15 nationalities contributing. The selected images showcase the Milky Way in diverse locations, including Chile's Atacama Desert, Argentina's Valle de la Luna, and Botswana. Rare astronomical events, such as the Perseids and Geminids meteor showers and a fireball over Florida, were also captured. The collection emphasizes the growing threat of light pollution, which is increasing by 2% annually, and highlights the importance of protecting these rare, unspoiled skies.
