Stratolaunch's Talon-A Hypersonic Vehicle Achieves Major Flight Milestone with Over 10 Successful Flights
Stratolaunch, a California-based aerospace company, has announced that its reusable, autonomous Talon-A hypersonic vehicle has completed more than 10 successful flights. The Talon-A is designed to travel at speeds exceeding Mach 5, which is five times the speed of sound, marking it as a significant player in hypersonic technology. The vehicle is launched from the belly of a carrier plane, either a modified Boeing 747 named Spirit of Mojave or Roc, a custom-built aircraft with the largest wingspan in aviation history. These flights typically take off from the Mojave Air and Space Port and conclude with a landing at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. The missions are primarily aimed at testing sensors and new materials in hypersonic conditions. The Talon-A serves as a technology testbed rather than a weapon, although its capabilities are of interest to military agencies, including the U.S. Missile Defense Agency.
