Increased Health Information Exchange Volume Shows Mixed Impact on Patient Outcomes
A recent study indicates that a higher volume of health information exchange (HIE), the electronic sharing of patient medical data among healthcare organizations, has varied effects on patient outcomes depending on the care setting. In community care settings, a significant increase in HIE volume was associated with positive outcomes, including fewer 30-day readmissions, avoidable hospitalizations, and inpatient deaths. However, in Veterans Health Administration (VHA) direct care, the same increase in HIE volume was linked to an increase in readmissions and inpatient deaths, with no significant impact on avoidable hospitalizations. This research, published in the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association, highlights the complex nature of HIE's impact, suggesting that while it can improve care coordination and reduce errors, its effectiveness is influenced by how information is integrated and utilized within different healthcare systems.
