CFPB Halts Publication of Consumer Complaint Narratives and Visualizations
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) announced on August 14 that it will no longer publish consumer complaint narratives and associated data visualizations in its Consumer Complaint Database. The CFPB stated that the publication of these materials was discretionary and that the narratives contain unverified allegations. According to the Bureau, these narratives present individual consumers’ accounts without independent verification of the underlying claims. The CFPB explained that publishing such narratives could create a misleading perception of companies' compliance, as the database primarily reflects negative experiences rather than a representative sample of all customer interactions. The Bureau also cited potential reputational harm to companies as a contributing factor in its decision to discontinue this practice.
