La Clínica del Pueblo Initiates Fundraising for Free Mammograms to Address Cancer Disparities
La Clínica del Pueblo, a health service provider in Carbondale, is actively fundraising to offer free mammograms to its female patients, particularly targeting the Latino community. The clinic, which has been providing low-cost health services for over a decade, currently lacks the capacity to offer mammograms in-house. This service is crucial as Latina women often face late-stage cancer diagnoses. Jenny Lang, the medical director, has personal motivations for this initiative, having lost her sister to breast cancer. The clinic has raised 15% of its $200,000 goal through private donations and is seeking additional funding from organizations like the National Association of Free & Charitable Clinics. Support from local hospitals is also being leveraged to subsidize mammogram costs.
