Increased Shark Sightings Along Southern California Coast Amid Warm Waters
Recent drone footage has captured great white sharks swimming alarmingly close to surfers off the coast of Southern California, particularly at Manhattan Beach. This footage, posted on April 15, shows a shark lurking just beneath the surface as a surfer rides a wave. Experts, including Chris Lowe from the Shark Lab at Cal State Long Beach, have noted that the region's waters are unusually warm, a condition that may be linked to El Niño. This warmth is believed to be attracting more sharks closer to shore, as it provides an ideal environment for young sharks due to suitable temperatures and abundant prey.
