UK Schoolchildren Invited to Reimagine Bayeux Tapestry's Missing Ending in 'Beyond the Battle' Competition
A new competition, 'Beyond the Battle,' is inviting primary school students across the UK, specifically Key Stage 2 pupils aged 7 to 11, to design and stitch a new final panel for the historic Bayeux Tapestry. The 70-meter-long embroidery, which depicts the Norman conquest of England culminating in the Battle of Hastings in 1066, has a famously missing final section. Instead of attempting to reconstruct the original lost scenes, the competition encourages children to imagine a 'better tomorrow' that might have followed the conquest, focusing on peace rather than further conflict. The competition, run by Art Explora UK in partnership with English Heritage, is set to begin in late September.
