Northeast U.S. Hit by Severe Storms, Flooding, and Possible Tornadoes
The Northeast U.S. experienced severe weather on Thursday, with heavy rain, strong winds, and possible tornadoes causing widespread disruption. A potential tornado touched down at Atlantic Beach on Long Island, New York, damaging a major beach club and scattering debris across the shoreline. Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman declared a state of emergency, reporting property damage but no serious injuries or deaths. In New Jersey, flash flooding trapped 69 people in their cars in Jersey City, requiring emergency rescues. Additionally, a likely tornado struck Dover, Delaware, causing significant damage across the city, though no serious injuries were reported there either. The National Weather Service had issued warnings for waterspouts in the Long Island area but could not immediately confirm a tornado. Flooding also led to the closure of parts of the Long Island Expressway in Queens, New York, and power outages affected over 1,000 customers in Delaware, most of which were quickly restored.
