Europe Faces Energy Challenges as Snow Shortfall Impacts Hydropower
Europe is experiencing significant energy challenges due to an unusually dry winter, particularly affecting Norway's hydropower system. The lack of snow has led to a deficit of about 25 terawatt-hours of energy, nearly a fifth of Norway's total hydropower output last year. This shortfall is impacting electricity markets, reducing exports to the U.K. and Germany, and causing Nordic prices to rise sharply. The coldest winter since 2010 has increased electricity demand, while wind generation has dropped sharply across Scandinavia. The situation underscores the vulnerability of Europe's energy system to weather patterns, as hydropower relies heavily on precipitation and snow accumulation. According to the Norwegian Meteorological Institute, Oslo recorded over 30 consecutive days with temperatures below freezing, further delaying inflows to reservoirs.
