Study Links Maternal Pre-Pregnancy Weight to Toddler Developmental Delays
A comprehensive study conducted in South Korea has found significant links between maternal pre-pregnancy weight and early childhood developmental delays. The research, published in Scientific Reports, analyzed data from over 250,000 mother-child pairs. It revealed that both underweight and obese mothers are associated with higher risks of developmental delays in their children, particularly in cognitive, language, and self-care skills. The study highlights that even mothers who are overweight, not just obese, may have children with increased cognitive delays. The strongest effects were observed in children of severely obese mothers, emphasizing the importance of maternal health before conception.
