NRO Awards New Contracts to SAR Satellite Providers for Enhanced Data Integration
The National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) has announced new contracts with three synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite operators: Capella Space, ICEYE US, and Umbra. These contracts are part of the NRO's effort to integrate commercial radar capabilities with its own classified intelligence systems. The contracts, which have a base performance period from August 1, 2026, to July 31, 2027, with options to extend until 2029, aim to enhance the NRO's intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capacity. The NRO's Commercial Systems Program Office has emphasized that these contracts represent an evolution from previous agreements, focusing on rigorous requirements and continuous improvement goals. This move is intended to leverage rapid innovation in the commercial space sector to augment the NRO's capabilities.
