Republican Blockade on Healthcare Subsidies Increases Uninsured Americans
The expiration of expanded premium tax credits, initially introduced by Congress in 2021, has led to a significant increase in health insurance premiums for many Americans. These subsidies, which were part of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), had previously reduced costs for over 20 million people. However, the Republican leadership blocked efforts to extend these subsidies, resulting in a 530% increase in premiums for some plans. This has forced many individuals to downgrade their coverage or drop it altogether. The share of people selecting lower-tier bronze plans has increased, while overall enrollment in ACA marketplace coverage has decreased by 13% in 2026 compared to the previous year.
