NIH-Funded Study Shows GLP-1 Treatment Extends Lifespan in Older Mice
A National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded study has revealed that the GLP-1 drug semaglutide extended the lifespan of older, healthy mice. Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, administered semaglutide to 20-month-old female mice for three months, observing improvements in muscle and cognitive function. Gene expression analysis indicated a reduction in hallmarks of natural aging, such as increased inflammation and decreased regenerative capacity. Another group of mice treated until the end of life experienced a median lifespan nearly 100 days longer than untreated mice. The study compared the effects of semaglutide with calorie restriction, finding that the drug mimicked the anti-aging benefits of reduced food intake and offered additional advantages in certain areas.
