Columbia University Student Workers' Union Drops Israel Divestment Demand Amid Contract Talks
The student workers' union at Columbia University has withdrawn its demand for the university to divest from Israel, a significant shift in its bargaining strategy. This decision was made during a recent bargaining meeting, where the union, representing over 3,000 student workers, voted to remove a contract article that called for divestment from entities violating international law. The union has been negotiating a successor contract since March 2025, facing a stalemate over what constitutes a 'workplace issue.' The withdrawal marks a departure from the union's previous pro-Palestinian stance, which included supporting the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement and opposing Columbia's expansion in Tel Aviv.
