OpenAI Introduces Computer History Feature for ChatGPT on macOS, Raising Privacy Considerations
OpenAI has launched 'Computer History,' an opt-in feature for the ChatGPT desktop application on macOS. This new functionality records user activity across permitted applications and websites, transforming it into a searchable timeline and local memories for ChatGPT and Codex. The feature, which requires ChatGPT Memories to be enabled, allows users to query their past activities, such as what they were working on or where they last saw a document. Unlike its predecessor, Chronicle, Computer History captures interaction events like clicks, typing, and app switching through macOS accessibility features, rather than relying on screenshots. OpenAI states that temporary event files remain on the Mac for up to 48 hours before deletion, while generated memory files stay locally until removed by the user. The feature is available to ChatGPT Pro, Business, and Enterprise users, but is currently unavailable in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
