Super El Niño Expected to Strengthen Through Late 2026
The Climate Prediction Center (CPC) has forecasted a significant strengthening of El Niño conditions through the remainder of 2026, with an 81% chance of a very strong event developing between October and December. This phenomenon, characterized by warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific, is expected to peak in late fall or early winter. Meteorologists predict above-normal precipitation across much of the Southern U.S., particularly in the Gulf States, Southeast, and Mid-Atlantic regions. The CPC notes that while El Niño events do not guarantee uniform impacts, stronger events tend to increase the likelihood of expected outcomes, such as wetter conditions in the South and warmer temperatures in the northern U.S. (Source: Newsweek, 2026-07-30).
