Jewish Watchdog Urges NYPD to Increase Presence After Manhattan Synagogue Attack
A Jewish security watchdog, the Community Security Initiative (CSI), is advocating for increased NYPD presence in potential hate crime hotspots following an antisemitic attack at Manhattan's Central Synagogue. On a Friday night, Larry Montes, 46, entered the synagogue's main sanctuary, disrupted the service with antisemitic slurs, struck a 63-year-old congregant, and headbutted a security personnel member while being escorted out. Montes, who has three prior arrests for robbery, was charged with multiple counts, including assault as a hate crime and disruption of a religious service. The incident occurred despite the synagogue's security team quickly defusing the situation, as Montes did not initially raise red flags upon entry. Antisemitic hate crimes in New York City have seen an 8.5% increase compared to the previous year, as of late July.
