Hackers Exploit Steam Game Meccha Chameleon with Malware, Affecting Players
The popular multiplayer game Meccha Chameleon, which sold 15 million copies in just one month, has been targeted by hackers. The attack involved user-generated content (UGC) containing malware, specifically through community maps available on the Steam Workshop. These maps, once downloaded, installed a Remote Access Trojan (RAT) on the affected systems, allowing hackers to gain persistent remote control over the compromised PCs. The game itself was not inherently dangerous; only those who downloaded the infected maps were impacted. The developer, Lemorion_1224, has since released a security patch in the game's 3.1.0 update to prevent the execution of unrelated files such as malware. Additionally, the game's Discord server was hacked, with the attackers bypassing a system engineer's 2-Factor Authentication to take over server permissions. The server has since been restored, and the hackers have been banned.
