UCLA to Close Infant and Toddler Child-Care Centers Amid Budget Concerns, Impacting 220 Children
UCLA has announced the closure of two university-run child-care centers, Krieger and University Village, by June 2027. These centers currently serve approximately 220 children, predominantly those of UCLA staff, faculty, and students. The decision, communicated by UCLA Provost Darnell Hunt on August 13, cites budget concerns following a thorough review of the program and available options. This move will eliminate on-campus care for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers, a service that has seen recent price hikes, reaching up to $3,300 per month for infants of UCLA-affiliated families. Parents and teachers have protested the decision, highlighting the critical need for child care in the Westside area of Los Angeles, which already faces an acute shortage and some of the nation's highest child-care costs. This closure marks a continuation of a years-long trend of reducing on-campus child care at universities and other institutions.
