Rare 2,500-Year-Old Coin Discovered on Ashdod Beach
A rare coin dating back approximately 2,500 years was discovered on a beach in Ashdod, Israel. The coin, originating from the city of Salamis in Cyprus, was found by Avi Chaprak, deputy director of the Ashdod Beaches Department. After being transferred to the Israel Antiquities Authority, it was identified as the first of its kind found in Israel. The coin, from the Persian period, is made of metal plated with silver and features a reclining ram and Cypriot syllabic script. This discovery provides valuable insights into ancient trade and economic ties between Cyprus and the Land of Israel.
