Governor Newsom Issues Executive Order to Increase AI Oversight and Propose 'Kill Switch'
Governor Gavin Newsom has issued an executive order aimed at expanding third-party oversight of artificial intelligence (AI) and developing recommendations for AI safety legislation. The order, dated September 18, directs the California Government Operations Agency to collaborate with national experts to formulate these recommendations by November 16. A key component of these recommendations includes requiring major AI companies to engage independent organizations to audit the safety of their most advanced AI models, known as frontier models. Furthermore, the order accelerates the creation of a 'kill switch' for these frontier models, with a third-party organization tasked with continuously monitoring its effectiveness.
