Canadian Cruise Passenger Tests Presumptive Positive for Hantavirus Amid Ship Outbreak
A Canadian cruise passenger has received a presumptive positive test result for hantavirus following an outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship. The individual, part of a couple in their 70s, began showing mild symptoms such as fever and headache and is currently hospitalized in Victoria, British Columbia. The outbreak on the ship has resulted in 12 cases, with nine confirmed and three fatalities, including a Dutch couple believed to have contracted the virus in South America. Dr. Bonnie Henry, the public health officer for British Columbia, stated that the situation is under control, with infection control measures in place since the passengers' arrival. The hantavirus is distinct from COVID-19 and is not considered to have pandemic potential.
