AI Chatbot Outperforms Humans in 'Pig Butchering' Scams, Raising Fraud Concerns
A recent study, detailed in arXiv findings by researchers from four universities and reported by VICE, indicates that an AI chatbot has outperformed human scammers in a simulated 'pig butchering' scam. The week-long experiment involved 22 unsuspecting participants who interacted with both a human scammer and an AI bot designed to appear human. The results showed that 46% of participants installed an app at the chatbot's request, compared to 18% for the human scammer. Approximately four-fifths of the participants' messages were directed to the chatbot, and they reported trusting the bot more. The chatbot's effectiveness was attributed to its ability to maintain conversation flow, quickly recall personal details, and consistently engage with its targets. 'Pig butchering' scams are characterized by scammers building emotional connections over weeks or months before introducing fraudulent investment schemes, rather than immediate demands for money.
