Virginia's Reinsurance Program Reduces Obamacare Costs for Residents
Virginia's reinsurance program is effectively reducing the monthly premiums for individuals covered by Obamacare policies. According to the State Corporation Commission, the program reimburses health insurers for a portion of large claims, which has led to a decrease in average monthly premiums from $617 to $519 per person. This initiative, which began in 2023, has consistently lowered costs, with last year's premiums averaging $483.15 compared to $577.63 without the program. The program is funded by both state and federal resources, with $331.9 million in federal funds allocated for fiscal year 2025. This funding is projected to save Virginians nearly $514 million in health insurance premiums. The program has also increased the number of Virginians purchasing Obamacare coverage by nearly 29,000, with a significant rise in those utilizing Affordable Care Act tax credits.
